“Josiah Booher Laid To Rest"
----------------
Old and Prominent Resident Buried Last Monday.
-----------------

Josiah Booher has gone to his last rest, and many in this locality that have been intimately acquainted with him since way back in 1874, have not the least doubt that his last sleep will be a pleasant and happy dream. The neighborhood in which he lived so long and the people he mingled among, have infinitely profited by the life of the deceased, and it is with mingled sorrow and regret that we pen these last lines of his untimely death.
Last spring when the deceased disposed of his property in Ute and it became known that he and Mrs. Booher [Ruhamy Briggs Booher] were going to leave the neighborhood for a time at least, it was cause for many regrets among those whom they lived and associated with for so many years. Mr. and Mrs. Booher had planned a delightful summer vacation and had departed upon the mission with nothing but brightness in the horizon of the future, and with exacted promises of their friends here that when they has spent the summer in visiting they would perhaps come back and settle in the old community they loved and where love was returned.
They had journeyed on their visit as far as the home of their daughter, Mrs. L. [Louis] H. Chase at Canton, S.D. [South Dakota], and while there Mr. Booher became afflicted with the dread disease that finally caused his death, cancer of the bladder. From that time until his death he was under the care of several noted medical and surgical men, the surgical men advising an operation, to which the deceased would not accede. Mr. and Mrs. Booher finally went to the home of their son, Robert, at Logan [Iowa] where the end came on February 2.
The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ here on Monday forenoon and the remains buried in St. Clair Cemetery. The funeral services were preached by G.R. Coleson, and were attended by a host of old time friends to bid farewell to one they had known and respected for so many years for his sterling worth as a citizen and neighbor.
The life history of Josiah Booher is a portion of the growth and development of this community. He moved here in 1874, and in the development of this community his life was always on the side of justice and mercy. He has ceased his labors, but his influence will be felt for many generations.
Josiah Booher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Booher, was born in Blakesburg, Wapello County, Iowa, on the eighth day of January, 1858, and died February 2, 1917.
In 1881, he was united in matrimony to Miss Ruhamy Briggs. To this union came the blessing of four children, two boys and two girls. All of the children have grown to sterling manhood and womanhood, each settled in their own homes. They are: Mrs. Ada Chase, Canton, S.D., Mrs. L.A. Jacobsen, Sumatra, Montana; Dr. Wallace Booher, Missouri Valley [Iowa]; Dr. Robert Booher, Logan. All the children were present during the last sad hours of their father’s life and attended the last rites here on Monday. ---- Ute Independent
