yron Eldon Johnson, 90, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away, Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Myron Eldon Johnson was born September 6, 1929 at the family home in Odebolt, Iowa, the son of Miron Eldon and Hattie (Haustetter) Johnon. He was the youngest of four siblings; Miron Lester who passed at age 2, Harold Paul, Donna May, and Dorothy Marie.

During high school he worked for the Odebolt Bakery, where he made bread, cookies, and rolls. Myron graduated from Odebolt High School in 1948. He wanted to go to Commercial Extension in Omaha, Nebraska for business school. In 1948, his father had a heart attack, and there wasn’t any money for Myron to attend the business school. His father never recovered and couldn’t work again. So the children all helped support the family by working.

Myron was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1951 and served during the Korean War. His basic training was at Fort Rucker in Alabama starting on February 16, 1951. He was in the 47th Division of the Minnesota National Guard. While in Alabama, they needed thirty-five volunteers to be medics. Myron’s hand shot up, because he wanted out of his current position, and he attended medical school in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Myron was a hospital technician or otherwise know as a bedpan commando! With only 6 months left to serve of the two-year draft, his Sergeant came over to his group and said he needed to ship them all out and leave only a skeleton crew. The Sergeant had a coffee cup containing different destinations written on a slip of paper. Myron reached in and picked out Fecon, Germany. He was upset about leaving his group, but some were headed to Korea. Myron served in a thirteen-man detachment-sick call for troops. Myron’s father passed away during his time in the service, and he took a train home for his father’s funeral. Myron was honorably discharged from the Army at Ft. Custer in Michigan.

After his discharge, he went to Chicago and took the train to Carroll, Iowa. He went to work for Maurice Johnson, picking up eggs and cream from local farmers. He then got hired back to the bakery in the Summer of 1953 after the owner passed away. On December 31, 1954, he quit the bakery and moved to Onawa, Iowa. From 1955 to 1967 he worked at McFarland Wardrip Furniture Store.

Myron and Dorothy Henshaw were united in marriage on July 10, 1955 in Sioux City, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Joyce, Janet, and Judy.

During the Summer of 1967, Howard Nielson offered Myron a job selling insurance. He started working for Monona County Mutual as an adjuster and part time agent. He became manager from January 1987 until his retirement in January of 1995.

Myron was a member of the Onawa United Methodist Church, and the Masonic Lodge-Sioux City Consistory.

He served on the Center Heights Board for twenty years, Diamond Heights Board for over fifteen years, the Onawa Country Club Board for a four year term, and was on the Nominating Committee for Grinnell Mutual Insurance.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and traveling with his wife. He loved caring and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-four years, Dorothy Johnson of Onawa, Iowa; his children, Joyce (Bob) Keele of Loveland, Colorado, Janet (Terry) Mann of Castana, Iowa, and Judy (John) Bahns of Brentwood, California; granchidlren, Jacque Keele, Julie Keele, Jean (Derek) Ward, Jenna (Adam) Cook, Jewel Mann and her fiancé Michael Gibler, Jackson (Estrella) Bahns, Jeffrey Bahns, and Joshua Bahns; great-grandchildren, Myron Cook, Merritt Cook, and Terrence Cook; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death his parents, Miron Eldon and Hattie (Haustetter) Johnson; his parents-in-law, Delbert and Dorothy (Hughes) Henshaw; his siblings, Rev. Harold (Lila) Johnson, Donna (Aubrey) Barclay, and Dorothy Johnson; and granddaughter, Jayna Marie Mann.
