1 April 2020Leland “Butch” Blankenship Jr., 74, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Center Heights, Onawa, Iowa.
Memorial Services will be held at a later date with graveside services at the Green Hill Cemetery in Rock Port, Missouri. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.
Butch was born August 29, 1945, in Peru, Nebraska, son of Leland Leroy Blankenship, Sr. and Norma Maxine (Barton). He grew up and graduated from Peru, Nebraska.
He was united in marriage to Jane Elaine (Kirk) on December 24, 1971, in Peru, Nebraska. She passed away July 19, 2010 in Rock Port, Missouri.
Butch served in the United States Army and served during Vietnam from October 19, 1965 until his honorable discharge on October 18, 1967.
He worked for the city of Rock Port at the Water Plant in Rock Port, Missouri. Butch enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, road tripping, and being outdoors. Later in life he also enjoyed going to the casino.
Butch was a member of the American David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa.
Survivors include his children, Jill DeJonge of Lincoln, Nebraska and Kary (Gary) Collison of Blencoe, Iowa; several grandchildren; sisters, Linda Huey of Omaha, Nebraska, Bonnie Groff of North Platte, Nebraska, and Julie (Gary) Thompson of Colombia, Missouri; and his girlfriend, Peggy Kunkel of Onawa, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Norma; wife, Jane Elaine (Kirk) Blankenship; infant son, Cory Michael Blankenship; and brother-in-law, Jeff Huey.
