13 November 2019Patricia A. Severson, age 87, of Moorhead, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 4, 2019 surrounded by her family.
Patricia Ann Severson was born March 26, 1932 to Lewis and Mary Frances (Sherman) Williams in Fort Dodge, Iowa. After graduating from Fort Dodge High School in 1950, Pat enrolled in Iowa State University and joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority as a freshman. While visiting her younger brother Alan at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, she was introduced to her future husband, Raymond Severson. Pat graduated from Iowa State in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to become a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines. Ray and Pat reconnected and got married in 1956. They returned to the farm in Moorhead, Iowa, in 1958 along with their first two children, Jeff and Mary Alice. Their second daughter, Laurie, was born two years later.
Although Pat loved being a stay-at-home mom, she played an active role in the church, serving as the president of Ladies Aid multiple times and teaching Sunday School and Bible School classes for many years. Ray and Pat also served as Luther League sponsors. In the community, Pat remained involved in Eastern Star and led her daughters’ 4-H club.
Despite her dislike for being in the kitchen, Pat was an excellent cook. Big holiday meals with the family were a particular point of pride. She loved to read and went through mystery and romance novels voraciously. Pat treated gardening as a craft to master. No amount of weeding, pruning, or watering her many plants and flowers was too much to keep the yard pristine. She dabbled in knitting and needlepoint with somewhat less enthusiasm.
Ray and Pat were truly blessed to travel the world and took countless trips with close friends and family. They showed remarkable devotion to their children and grandchildren, never missing a sporting event or school activity no matter how small. She is survived by her husband Raymond; her daughters Mary Alice Johnson (Robert) of Blair, Nebraska, and Laurie Gray (William) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren Thomas Johnson, Todd Johnson (Jill), and Elizabeth Gray; and her great-grandson Hank Johnson. She was preceded in death by her son Jeffrey Severson; her parents; and her brothers James Williams and Alan Williams.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Soldier Lutheran Church on Friday, November 8, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Marsha Smith officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Soldier Lutheran Country Church or Cemetery Fund in Pat’s name.
