Gilbert “Gene” Hedges, 80, of Onawa, Iowa passed away Thursday, July 4, 2019 in Bellevue, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Michael Lewis, officiating.

Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa with Military Honors by the United States Navy and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Gilbert “Gene” Hedges was born September 6, 1938 in rural Onawa, Iowa the son of Gilbert and Evelyn (Barker) Hedges. The family moved into the town of Onawa for several years until moving to Dunlap for a few years. His family then moved to Omaha, Nebraska, for about one year, and then moved to Gretna, Nebraska, where Gene graduated from Gretna High School in 1956. Gene served in the United States Navy from December 27, 1957 until his honorable discharge on September 27, 1961. He was active in the Navy Reserves until approximately 1978.

Gene and Pauline Kay Mincey were united in marriage on November 29, 1963 in Woodbine, Iowa.

Gene worked as a rural route mail carrier for the United States Postal Service.

Gene loved telling jokes and sharing stories. He especially loved spending time with his family at the river. Gene also enjoyed volunteering his time and talents at the Monona County Veterans Museum in Onawa, Iowa.

Survivors include one son, Darrin (Michelle) Hedges of Bellevue, NE; one daughter, Kristi Umshler of Council Bluffs, IA; sister-in-law, Lousie Barker of Castana, IA; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Evelyn (Barker) Hedges; his wife, Pauline Kay Hedges; two sons, Jeff (Amy Jo) Hinkel and Frank Hinkel; one son-in-law, Mike Umshler; four brothers, Bob Barker, Royal (JoAnn) Hedges, Rudy (Donna) Hedges, and Virgil Hedges; and three sisters, Della (Paul) Brannan, Nancy (Jack) Hawbaker, and Ethel (Jack) Agerson.
