Civil War Veteran and Onawa Pioneer Laid To Rest Last Sunday Afternoon

He Passed Away October 23rd at the Age of 90 Years 8 Months and 21 days—Funeral Services Were Held From The Onawa Christian Church Conducted By His Pastor Rev. Orval E Walker

Another pioneer and Civil War Veteran has answered the last call, thus thinning the raks of call, thus thinning men who fought in the Civil War. With the passing of Amos Rutledge only a very few Civil War Veterans remain in Onawa. Mr. Rutledge was a pioneer of the vicinity and was highly respected by all who knew him.

Following is the Obituary:

Amos William Rutledge son of Sara Byron and Peter Rutledge was born at Danville, Wisconsin January 21, 1841 and died at Onawa, Iowa October 22, 1931 at the age of 90 years 8 months and 21 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Ruby Ann Morton, March 1866. To this union 6 children were born – 3 having died in infancy and Clyde E Rutledge, who died in May 1922 at the age of 56.

On October 19, 1888 he was married to Mrs. Mary Persinger. To this union 1 son, Fred was born.

He enlisted in the service of his country, February 21, 1861 with captain Clarks regiments of the Wisconsin Volunteers and was discharged by reason of surgeon’s certificate of disability, February 22, 1866 from Carvers Hospital at Washington.

He leaves to mourn his death, 2 sisters, Mrs. Mina Williams of Grand Island, Nebraska and Mrs. Charles Holden of Council Bluffs and 1 son Fred Rutledge of Onawa, also 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

The funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock by the pastor Rev. Orval E. Walker. Mrs. Plinske and Mrs. Kintign sang appropriate and comforting songs. The Legion had charge of military honors.
