ONAWA, Iowa -- Opal Sandvold Folsom, 95, of Onawa died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, with Pastor Steven Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Opal Caroline was born Oct. 21, 1910, at rural Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of Hans Oscar and Caroline Matilda (Rude) Sandvold. She was raised in the Soldier, Iowa, area and attended Jordan Township and Spring Valley Township country schools before entering Soldier High School. After graduation, she attended Morningside College, Iowa State Teachers College, Wayne State College, the University of Nebraska and NBT in Sioux City.

She married Laurence Clayton Folsom on Dec. 7, 1942, at Santa Ana, Calif. The couple made their home in California before moving to Onawa. Laurence passed away in January 1977 at Onawa. Opal owned and operated Opal's Salon of Beauty in Onawa for 20 years and along with her husband, owned and operated Folsom Real Estate (now Onawa Real Estate) and Folsom Construction. She was also an elementary teacher and later was a cosmetologist instructor at Tyler Beauty School in Sioux City.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, WELCA, Sioux City Coiffure Guild, Onawa Women's Club, BPW, Tri County Real Estate and Onawa Chamber of Commerce. Opal enjoyed many hobbies, traveling over a million miles to all parts of the world, conducting tour groups, reading, gourmet cooking and needlework. She loved wintering in Honolulu during her semi-retirement years. She was a lifelong learner.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Vanna and Craig Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Christopher Scott (Lisa) Johnson, Lindsay Caroline (Sean) Fredregill and Eric Reynold Johnson; a sister and her husband, Joyce and Jerry Leaf of San Diego, Calif.; and two brothers and their wives, Olaf and Vivian Sandvold of Moorhead, Iowa and Norris and Delores Sandvold of Haleiwa, Hawaii.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lavonne Sandvold Shull; and a brother, Claire Sandvold.

Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa.
