23 January 2019Cheri K. Gibler, 67, of Turin, Iowa, passed from this life on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, surrounded by her family.
Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Michael Lewis officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Cheri was born on January 28, 1951, at the hospital in Onawa, Iowa, to “Cornie” and Joyce (Mikkelson) Mathison. She grew up on a farm outside of Turin, Iowa. Cheri began kindergarten in Castana, Iowa, and then attended West Monona in Onawa, where she graduated in 1969. She then attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, where in 1973 she graduated sum cum lauda with a degree in teaching. She began her teaching of “little people” in Ludlow, Missouri, for a year and a half.
Cheri then moved to Blencoe, Iowa, and married Jack Gibler on December 21, 1974. To this union three children, two daughters and one son, were born.
She began teaching kindergarten at West Monona in 1976, and remained there until her retirement in 2006. After retirement, she substitute taught in area schools and spent time with her grandchildren, who were her greatest joy.
Cheri enjoyed reading of any kind; walking with a good friend, Jeannie Bottorff; traveling; and horses. Her love of water led her to work for 17 years at the Onawa Aquatic Center.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jack Gibler of Turin, IA; her three children and their spouses, Terah (Ryan) Stoll of Olathe, KS, Tiffany (Troy) Campbell of Sussex, WI, and Jared (Sara Sandmann) Gibler of Turin, IA; and four grandchildren, Caden Stoll, Jace Stoll, Daschle Gibler, and Lennon Gibler.
She was preceded in death by her parents, “Cornie” and Joyce Mathison, and two brothers, Chris Mathison and Casey Mathison.
