Long Time Resident of Ute Community Died At Mapleton

Mrs. Albert Martin, better known to people of the Ute community as Mrs. Carl Jessen, died at Mapleton last week and was laid to rest here in St. Clair Cemetery on Wednesday.

The deceased and her first husband first settled in the Berne community northeast of Ute, moving from here to a farm south of Ute and then to the farm four miles west of Ute where she resided for thirty years and where two of her sons still reside. We publish the following obituary from last week’s Mapleton Press.

Funeral services for Mrs. Albert Martin, Sr., 82-year-old resident of Mapleton, who passed away early Monday morning in the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Martin, following a lingering illness, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.

Rev. August Rueber, pastor of the church, officiated.

Interment was in the St. Clair Cemetery at Ute under the direction of the Byers Funeral Home of Mapleton.

Harold Martin, Donald Martin and Edgar Martin of Mapleton and Martin Jessen, Jr., of Ute, all grandsons, Harold Godbersen of Mapleton and Willis Martin of Denison served as pallbearers.

Katherine Godbersen was born July 13, 1856, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She grew to women-hood in that country and was married to Carl Frederick Jessen. Later they came to America and established a home, residing many years on farms in this community. Mr. Jessen preceded her in death and she was married a second time to Albert Martin Sr., of Mapleton, May 12, 1924. They made their home I Mapleton since that time.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Ladies’ Aid Society. She had been failing in health during the last year and had been bedfast the last four months.

She is survived by her husband and several children, Martin Jessen of Ames, Chris Jessen, Paul Jessen and Cornelius Jessen of Ute, Harry Jessen of Danbury, Miss Theresa Jessen of Ute and Mrs. Martin of Mapleton. Fifteen grandchildren and one brother, Henry Godbersen of Mapleton, also survive—Mapleton Press
