Doris I. Courtney, 92, of Whiting, Iowa passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Whiting, Iowa with Pastor Nea Stepp, officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery, rural Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Doris I. (Coombs) Courtney was born October 19, 1925, at rural Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, the daughter of Gilbert A. and Minnie R. (Hansen) Coombs. During the depression, as an infant, she moved with her parents to the Allen-Waterbury, Nebraska area, and in 1934 the family moved to the Climbing Hill, Iowa area. In March 1940, they located in the Vermillion, South Dakota area where she graduated from high school. After attending National Business Training School in Sioux City, she returned to Vermillion to work at a bank and later for the state chemist office at the University of South Dakota.

On October 19, 1950, she was united in marriage to J. Robert Courtney and has resided near Whiting, Iowa since. Mr. Courtney passed away on March 30, 1989, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Courtney moved in to Whiting in November 1989.
She worked over twenty years at John Holmes Publishing in Whiting, Iowa, retiring in January of 1988.

Mrs. Courtney was an active member of the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Whiting for over sixty years. She served on the church council in various capacities and was active in the women’s groups of the church. She was Past Matron of the Whiting Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and currently over fifty year member of Queen Easter Chapter in Onawa, Iowa. She enjoyed various hand crafts such as crocheting, plastic craft, and counted cross stitch. She also enjoyed volunteering before she became disabled.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Robert “Bob” and Barb Courtney of Fort Dodge, Iowa; grandchildren, Kara (Neal) Cooley, Karla Courtney, Chad Courtney, and Brian (Jessica) Courtney; great grandchildren, McCoy Cooley, Lia Cooley, Jenevieve Courtney, and Mila Courtney.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert A. and Minnie R. (Hansen) Coombs and her husband, J. Robert Courtney.
