William A. Ethier, 87, of Whiting, formerly of Sioux City, passed away suddenly of natural causes on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at the Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 2 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Father Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside rites offered by the U.S. Naval Reserve. Visitation, with family present, will be one hour prior to the service.

William was born on May 24, 1930 in Fall River, Mass. to William A. and Exilia A. (Simcock) Ethier. William served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-54, and was discharged as a Radarman 3rd Class Petty Officer. He received his education at the Bradford Durfee College of Technology in Fall River from 1955-59, graduating with a bachelor of science in engineering. William moved to Sioux City in 1959 and worked as an engineer in high-profile projects like Dulles International Airport, various missile bases, NASA Space Center – Cape Canaveral, Fla. and various sewage treatment plants throughout Iowa until 1972. On February 12, 1966, William married Viola E. Wemhoff at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City. He retired from Irving F. Jensen, Inc. in 1995. In 2014, William and Viola moved to Whiting, where she continues to reside.

William was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church of Sioux City, enjoyed gardening, vintage movies, and politics.

William is survived by his wife of 51 years, Viola of Whiting (whom he devotedly cared for many years at home before she went into a nursing facility); children, Kirk Ethier and his wife Barbi of Whiting, Gregory Ethier and his wife Angela of Dallas, Texas and Todd Ethier of Pinellas Park, Fla.; grandchildren, Ryan, Nicholas, Elle and Benjamin Ethier of Whiting; Bailey and Julia Ethier of Dallas, Texas and Joshua Ethier of Pinellas Park, Fla.

William was preceded in death by his parents.

Casket Bearers for the service will be Ryan Ethier, Bailey Ethier, and Nicholas Ethier, and other family members.
