Leo J. Weber, age 94, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away, Friday December 1, 2017, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 9, 2017, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. Committal Service will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, with Military Rites conducted by Loren Hollister Post No. 496 of the American Legion of Mapleton, IA. A visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a vigil service at 7:00p.m. with a Rosary to follow, Friday, December 8, 2017, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Leo J. Weber, the son of John and Anna (Kleine) Weber, was born on June 22, 1923, in rural Danbury, IA. Leo grew up on the family farm and attended Living Springs Country School. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army in July of 1944.
Leo served his country overseas in Germany during World War II and was decorated for his service to his country with the Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, and European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars; a Good Conduct Medal, one Overseas Bar and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in March of 1946.
Leo returned home to the family farm west of Danbury, IA, and picked up where he had left off farming with his father. On September 23, 1947, Leo married Helen Uhl in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury. The couple made their home on a farm and were blessed with six children: Gary, Karen, Lynette, Mark, Patricia and Laurie.
Leo and Helen moved into Mapleton on December 8, 1987. Although Leo was retired it was no surprise that he continued to make daily trips to their family farm, working up until the age of 85 years. He especially took pleasure in operating the combine during harvest. To say that Leo loved farming is an understatement, he lived for it!
He also enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and took great pride in caring for his lawn. He will be remembered as a quiet, humble, gentle soul, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Lynette Weber of Centennial, CO, Mark (Laura) Weber of Mapleton, IA, Patricia Gleason (Mark Ibsen) of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Laurie Weber of Mapleton, IA; six grandchildren: Beth Weber, Paul Weber, Anne Weber, Bridget (Elliot) Hoefflin, Colin Gleason and Mary Kate Gleason; sisters Carole Barkley of Sioux City, IA, and Alice Weber of Mapleton, IA; sisters-in-law Ellen Weber of Danbury, IA, Evonne Weber of Denison, IA, and Martha Uhl of Mapleton, IA; brother-in-law Tom Thiel of Renton, WA.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna Weber; wife of 70 years Helen Weber whom recently passed on 10/12/17; son Gary Weber, daughter Karen Weber; siblings Raymond (Rita & Marian) Weber, James Weber, Mary Ann (Paul) Schoenherr, Irma (James) Sokolowski, Donald “Bud” (Marian) Weber, Lois (Ronald) Seuntjens, Helen Thiel, Vernal Weber, and Martha (John) Halloran; brothers- and sisters-in-law James Barkley, Sister Anne Uhl, Alfred (Nadine) Uhl, Charles (Irene) Uhl, Mary (Ed) Determan, Caroline (Casper) Meier, Bernice Uhl and Leo Uhl whom recently passed on 3/28/2017.
