Steven "Hairball" Harris, 65, of Moorhead, Iowa passed away Monday, November 13, 2017 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. A Celebration of Life service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Midway Tavern in Soldier, Iowa with Pastor Shari Schwedhelm, officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Aaby American Legion Post #442 and VFW Post #5605 both of Ute, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Steven Clark Harris was born June 28, 1952 at the Onawa Hospital in Onawa, Iowa the first of four children to Maynard and Joyce (Loomis) Harris. He graduated from East Monona High School in 1970.

Steve enlisted in United States Air Force in March of 1972. He took his basic training at Lackland A.F.B. in San Antonio, TX as an aircraft mechanic. He was sent to March A.F.B. in Riverside, CA where he received his orders for Thailand in June 1972 (during the Vietnam War). Steve served two and a half years in S.E. Asia as Crew Chief on B-52 and KC-135 aircraft. He also served as Assistant Crew Chief on fifteen different Air Force bases around the world. He returned to the states and received an honorable discharge with the rank of E-4 (Sgt.) in October of 1975. Steve returned home where he helped his father on the farm.

Steve married Sandy Tolliver in 1970 and to this union three children were born, Chad Allyn Harris, Kami Jo Harris, and Brent Lee Harris. Steve later married Debra Dee Payson in 1978 and Debra had a daughter, Tara Dee Payson, and the couple had two sons, Clint Steven Harris and Christopher Colby Harris.

Steve worked construction for Borchman out of Omaha, NE. He then purchased a semi-tractor, leasing to Herman Bros. of Omaha and then BMC of Columbus, NE. Steve became a dispatcher for Central Transport of Norfolk, NE and later worked for Mapleton Grain in Mapleton, Iowa. He then owned and operated the Midway Tavern in Soldier, Iowa for twenty-six years until his passing.

Steve loved sharing in the joy and stories at the Midway Tavern over the years. He had a love of riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle in the hills and relished in time spent with family and his many friends. He always put others first and had a deep passion to provide for others including the Moorhead, Soldier, and Ute fire departments thru the nineteen years of the annual Labor Day rallies at the Midway. He will truly be missed by all his family and friends.
Survivors include his fiancé, Denice Beneda of Moorhead, IA; his children, Chad (Molly) Harris of Gretna, NE, Kami (Mark) Burghardt of Gretna, NE, Brent (Jennifer) Harris of Omaha, NE, Tara Payson of Papillion, NE, Clint (fiancé Meckensie Jensen) Harris of Moorhead, IA, and Christopher Harris of Council Bluffs, IA; seventeen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his mother, Joyce Harris of Moorhead, IA; sister, Joni (Kevin) Swenson of Soldier, IA; brother, David (Johana) Harris of San Antonio, TX, and sister-in-law, Sandy Harris of Soldier, IA; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Maynard Harris; brother, Thomas "Tom" Harris; and sister-in-law, Shon Harris.

Memorials in Steve's memory may be made to the VFW Post #5605 and the Aaby American Legion Post #442 both of Ute, Iowa.
