22 November 2006Alvin Ray Baragar, 75, Onawa, Iowa died Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Burgess Health Center, Onawa.
Alvin Ray Baragar was born March 5, 1931 at Hot Springs, South Dakota, the son of Charles W. and Lillian B. (Thomas) Baragar. He was raised and educated through Western South Dakota and Nebraska. At the age of 16, he started his career of truck driving at a sawmill in South Dakota. He joined the United States Army August 10,1949 and was an auto mechanic/truck driver serving in Korea during the Korean War until his discharge September 18, 1952 when he returned to truck driving.
He married Helen Louise Roberts August 30, 1962 at Chadron, NE. The couple made their home and raised their family in various places in Western Nebraska until moving to Onawa in 1988. He continued trucking for King Transfer and later Siouxland Recovery until his retirement in 2001 with over 50 years on the road throughout the United States and Canada.
Alvin enjoyed woodworking, reading Westerns, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Onawa; three sons and their wives, Allen and Shiela of Ainsworth, NE; Rod and Shawntel of Soldier, IA and Brad and Janette of Mapleton, IA; three grandsons, Logan, Dakota and Trevor; four sisters, Bobbie Letchworth of Las Vegas, NV, Lucille Williams of Millsap, TX, Shirley and her husband Paul Oren of Portland, OR and Dorothy Willey of Gettysburg, SD; three brothers and their wives, Robert and Catherine of Torrington, WY, Charles Jr. and Jean of Carson City, OC and Leroy and Edna of Fostoria, MI; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Baragar of Biloxi, MS and Shirley Baragar of Box Elder, SD and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dean and Francis and twin brother and sister, Paul and Pauline.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 21,2006 at the Evangelical Free Church, Onawa with Pastor Bill Menke officiating. The congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross", Brenda Peters sang "Daddy's Hands," a CD "Giddy-Up-Go" was played and the recessional was "Roll On". Alice Masters was pianist. Burial was in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation was from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.
Casket bearers were Bill Gustin, Ed Gustin, Richard Hall, Dwight Masters, Ed Weiner and Dan Stanislav.
Honorary bearers were Duane Burger, George King, Don Gustin and all Alvin's other Friends.
