Thomas T. Loomis, Jr., 78, Onawa, Iowa, died Sunday, August 7, 2005 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa. A memorial service will be 10:00 AM Monday, August 29, 2005 at Rush Family Chapel, Onawa with Rev. Don Collison officiating. Burial will be at Spring Valley Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Monona County VFW Post #2694 and the United States Navy.

Thomas was born July 7, 1927 at Onawa, the son of Thomas Taylor and August a (Rathbun) Loomis. He was raised in Onawa and attended school at Onawa Public school before entering the United States Merchant Marines in 1944, serving for one year. Tom then joined the United States Navy May 1945 and served until June 1948. He reenlisted in the United States Navy August 1950 and served during the Korean War as a gunner's mate second class aboard the USS Chara (AKA-58) until his discharge June, 1954. In 1959, he served one year in the Army National Guard. Thomas attended Omaha School of Art from 1954 - 1957 and worked as nurse attendant at Veterans Hospital in Omaha during that time. He later worked at' Burgess Memorial Hospital for 17 years. He married Maxine Bentley June 2, 1962 at Elk Point, South Dakota.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Onawa; two step daughters, Frances Morgan of Kiron, IA and Betty Ann Welty of Davenport, Iowa; a sister and her husband Joyce and Maynard Harris of Moorhead, IA; 12 step grandchildren; 28 step great grandchildren; 7 step great-great grandchildren; 2 nieces and 6 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Patricia Ann Salter and Mary Jane Loomis and a nephew, Tim Cooper.
