Gene Soukup, 80, of Ute, passed away Sunday, June 18, at Maple Heights Care Center of Mapleton.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 21, at the St. John Lutheran Church of Charter Oak. Rev. Richard Merrill officiating.

Committal Services: St. Clair Township Cemetery, Ute, following the Funeral Service.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, June 20, at Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ute.

Gene Edward Soukup, the son of Fred and Ella (Petersen) Soukup, was born on Jan. 8, 1937, in Ute. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ute.

Gene grew up in Ute and attended St. Clair #4 Country School until the seventh grade when he started attending Lutheran School. He graduated from Ute High School with the Class of 1955.

Out of high school, Gene worked in Omaha, Neb., for Braniff Airlines and the Omaha Postal Service.

On June 23, 1957, Gene married Karen Grant in the Soldier Lutheran Church of Soldier. The couple moved home to the farm in 1958 where they farmed for 45 years. Gene and Karen were blessed with three children, Denny, Steve, and Patti.

Gene served in the Army National Guard for six years and attended auctioneering school in Kansas City. He and Karen spent several winters in Arizona and retired and moved into Ute in 2003. They enjoyed traveling, antiquing, and spending time with family.

Throughout his life, Gene was active in his church. He served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, usher, and a member of the Finance Committee. In 2014, he entered Maple Heights Nursing Home where he remained until being called home by our Lord.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ella Soukup.

He is survived by wife, Karen Soukup; sons, Denny Soukup and friend Jaye of Clovis, Calif., and Steve and wife, Lori, of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Patti and husband, Burdette Vogt, of Charter Oak; four grandchildren, Ashley Briar and husband, Travis, of Olathe, Kan., Tyler and wife, Meredith, of Des Moines, Brandon Vogt and friend Mardi Goslar of Ute, and Ryan Vogt of Charter Oak; and one great-granddaughter, Ella Briar.
