WHITING, Iowa -- Elvin E. Burns, 88, of Whiting died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Whiting Christian Church, with the Rev. Rusty Hedger officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Elvin was born May 24, 1916, in rural Whiting, the son of Roy E. and Anna (Parr) Burns. He was raised in Whiting and graduated from Whiting High School in 1936. He was a farm laborer until World War II, when he moved to Sioux City and was employed at a defense plant.

He married Mildred Palmer on Sept. 11, 1948, at St. John's Methodist Church in Mapleton, Iowa. The couple lived in Sioux City, where he was employed with Sears until 1960, when they returned to his home place. He farmed there until retiring in the mid-1990s. The couple had moved into Whiting in 1980.

He was a member of Whiting Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Millie of Whiting; three sons and their wives, Martin and Lorri Burns of Springfield, Ohio, Michael and Debbie Burns of Whiting, and Mark and Jean Burns of Ida Grove, Iowa; two daughters, Marcia Arledge of Manassas, Va., and Monica and her husband, Dave Brundeen of Carr, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; a brother and his wife, Herbert and Ardith Burns of Peoria, Ariz.; two sisters, Eileen Mungon of Weatherford, Texas, and Joyce and her husband, Morris Erickson of Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Art Heuermann of Sarasota, and Gail Palmer of Sioux City; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Gerrietts of Le Mars, Iowa, and Marilyn Palmer of Washta, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ruth Heuermann and her son, Gary, Kathleen (Clarence) Dahl and their sons, Richard and Dennis Dahl, and Winiford Burns; a sister-in-law, Mae Doris (Lawrence) Robbins; and four brothers-in-law, George Mungon, Lowell Gerrietts, Paul Palmer and Don (Evelyn) Palmer.
