Robert J. McVicker, age 87, of Niles, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Indiana.

A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Mt. Hope Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. Pastor Kirk Manchester will officiate. A Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Graveside Service from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Armstrong – Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Robert James McVicker was born in Sioux City, Iowa to Russell R. and Nadine H. (Beatty) McVicker on October 19, 1929. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1947. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Poultry Husbandry and served on the staff at Iowa State University. A Master’s Degree in Agriculture & Applied Science was earned from Michigan State University. Robert was a Professor in Poultry Science at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, then went into industry as a Regional Sales Manager for Allied Mills Feed Company, Chicago and in 1967 as the Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Aerovent Fan and Equipment Company, East Lansing, MI. In 1976 Robert and his wife, Velma, formed AAA Associated Inc. in Niles, Michigan manufacturing the first fiberglass ventilation equipment worldwide for the agriculture, livestock and greenhouse industries. Robert retired in 1999 to a two hundred acre farm in Niles. His greatest passion in life was fishing and hunting. Music also was important to Robert, beginning with playing the trombone in high school band and in college where he was also the vocalist for a dance band. He was a member of a men’s quartet which won statewide awards. Robert sang in many church choirs and was a soloist at weddings and other functions. Robert was a member of Portage Prairie United Methodist Church in Niles serving as a member of the choir.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Velma, his daughters Kathy (Harold) Garner and Karen (John) Black of St. Louis, his sons George and Russell McVicker of St. Louis and Stephen (Debbie) McVicker of Louisville, KY, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, a sister, Nannette Lundahl of Bullard, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Shannon.
