Detta Mae Banks Stark of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away on Aug. 18, the anniversary of her father’s birth.

Born in Moville on April 26, 1933, she was the third child and youngest daughter of Ed and Dorothy Banks. Raised on a farm in Western Iowa, she learned the value of education, the necessity of hard work and the importance of God’s creations. She consistently applied these values to her life and impressed them on those around her.

Detta graduated in 1952 from Mapleton High School. She moved to the Alaska Territory and married Verlin Stark in 1958. She fell in love with Alaska and considered the Great Land her home. Detta had a full career working in television, communications, and the education community. With the ability to think under pressure and keen common sense, Detta was an asset to all.

Detta always had time to lend an ear or a hand, and the ability to make a stranger feel welcome. Detta’s daughter and two granddaughters were her heart’s desire and she continually lavished unconditional love and support to them. Her absence will never be filled.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Roberta Anderson; and brother, Eugene Banks.

A kind and beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Detta is survived by daughter, Karlyn Kay Wilkie (Scott); granddaughters, Kate and Molly; brother, Robert Banks (Bonnie); and sister-in-law, Elaine Banks; and many nieces, nephews and close friends, all of whom she dearly loved.

A Celebration of Life was held on Aug. 24 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Detta’s family and friends filled to church to standing room only, followed by an ice cream social.
