Janice J. Castle, age 83, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at the Burgess Health Center of Onawa, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 01, 2016, at the St. John’s United Methodist Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Pastor Jena Manchester will officiate the service, with the committal services following in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery of Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 30, 2016, at the Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Janice J. Castle, the daughter of Nels W. and Tillie A. (Cerny) Jensen, was born on October 11, 1932, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Janice grew up in Council Bluffs until her freshman year of high school when her family relocated to farm west of Castana, Iowa. She attended Castana High School and graduated with the class of 1952.

After high school, Janice worked at a local drug store and the Onawa Telephone Company. On April 5, 1955, Janice was united into marriage to the love of her life Leslie Castle at her parent’s farm west of Castana, Iowa. The couple made their first home in Ticonic, Iowa before moving to Mapleton, Iowa in 1961. Janice and Leslie were blessed with three sons, Douglas, Larry, and Bruce.

Janice was baptized on September 9, 1972 at the Ute Christian Church. A wonderful homemaker, Janice enjoyed dancing, cooking, listening to music, traveling and attending music festival’s in Avoca, Iowa, also a fiddlers contest in Yankton, South Dakota just to name a few. She taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir. Janice listened to audio tapes as her eyesight began to fail and joined the local group in Denison named the Iowa Department for the Blind acting as a Past President.

Janice truly treasured her family. She loved visiting with them and her friends. Janice will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, with a heart of gold and a kind word for all who knew her.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 61 years, Leslie Castle of Mapleton, Iowa; children, Douglas and wife Renee Castle of Clinton, Iowa, Larry and wife Judi Castle of Mapleton, Iowa, Bruce Castle of Mapleton, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Adam, Aaron, Andrew, Ashley, Tiffany, Josh, Tara, Molli, and Brad; seven great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Tillie Jensen; brother, Ronald Jensen; and sister, Lola June Jensen.
