Helen I. Ryan, 86, of Blencoe, Iowa passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska surrounded by her family.

A funeral mass will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Blencoe, Iowa with Father Michael Erpelding, Celebrant, officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 27, 2016 with a scriptural wake service at 7:00 P.M. followed by the rosary at 7:30 P.M. at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Helen Iva was born December 19, 1929 on the family farm near Onawa, Iowa the daughter of Thomas Herbert "Bert" and Edith (Messing) Benjamin. She attended school and graduated from Onawa High School. After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator.

Helen and John L. Ryan were united in marriage on August 6, 1952. The couple farmed and operated Ryan's Landing. John preceded her in death on April 1, 2008.

Helen enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, gardening both flowers and vegetables, bird watching, cooking, and baking. She loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and their Rosary Society.

Helen is survived by her four children, Michael William Ryan of Blencoe, IA, John Timothy Ryan of Onawa, IA, Patty (Terry) Sandmann of Onawa, IA, and Maureen Ryan of Blencoe, IA; her five grandchildren, Katie (Blake) Moore, Sara (Jared) Gibler, Tyler Sandmann, Nicole Ryan, and Dillon Ryan; her five great-grandchildren, Mason Moore, Everly Moore, Daschle Gibler, Lennon Gibler, and Jayden Ryan; two sisters-in-law, Verla Benjamin of Onawa, IA and Bernice Benjamin of South Sioux City, NE; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John L. Ryan; two sisters, Mary Benjamin and Virginia Beck; five brothers, Reverend George Benjamin, Herbert Benjamin; Maurice Benjamin, Thomas Benjamin, and Paul Benjamin; a nephew, Matthew Benjamin; and a great nephew, A. J. Benjamin.
