27 August 1964Stella Vesta Oliver, daughter of Alfred and Vesta Smith, was born at Bingham, Maine on March 29, 1871. Her father had been a member of the Ninth Maine Regiment, serving to the close of the Civil War. The family came to Monona County in 1882.
March 14, 1895 she was united in marriage with Frank G, Oliver. The wedding announcement in the Onawa Democrat of March 21, 1895 stated that following the marriage they went to live in a “cozy and daintily furnished new home in Franklin Township, just completed by Mr. Oliver.”
Mrs. Oliver was a member of the Congregational Church for 76 years and of the G.A.R. Society. Through the years her life interests and activities centered in her home and family, and her church as her ties with her dear ones and her Lord so also her love of Country was strong and deeply meaningful.
Following a brief illness her spirit returned to the God who gave it early Tuesday morning, August 18, 1964.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J.E. Feller (Mildred) of Phoenix, Arizona and Mrs. Leo Hansen (Esther) of Onawa; two sons, F. Gordon and Willard S., both of Onawa; three grandchildren, Dr. Richard T. Oliver of Lafayette, Ind., Mrs. L.R. Pryor (Vesta Feller) of Crownpoint, N.M. and Jerrold B. Oliver of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Frank and Jacqueline Oliver and John Pryor; a sister, Mrs. G.A. Howard of Glendale, California and a brother, B. J. Smith of Newport Beach, California.
Mr. Oliver passed away in January of 1958.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 20 at the Congregational Church. Rev. C.E. Hanan officiated, Mrs. Willie Jensen sang, “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” and “The Lords Prayer,” accompanied by Mrs. Evan Davies.
The casket bearers were E.C. Myrland, Clarence Mathiasen, Robert Underhill, Fred Fountain, Willie Jensen and Leonard Davis. Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home.
