Donald Ernest Wright, Sr., 92, of Onawa, Iowa passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016 at his residence.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Michael Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Belvidere Cemetery, Turin, Iowa with military honors provided by American Legion David McNeill Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa and Monona County VFW Post #2694. Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Monday, June 13, 2016 at Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Donald Ernest, Sr. was born January 20, 1924 in Onawa the son of Pete Sr. and Cora (Trimble) Wright. He was raised in Onawa where he attended school. He enlisted on May 16, 1943 in the United States Army and served in Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged on October 19, 1945. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star.

Donald, Sr. and Bernice Phipps were united in marriage on October 3, 1945 in Onawa. Two children were born to this union, Donald, Jr. and Sally.

He was employed as a farm laborer/hand for over forty years by the Hodgson family, Jack, Tom, and Tim Hodgson.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, deer hunting, and photography. He could always be found in his blue denim overalls fixing lawn mowers, small engines, or driving around Blue Lake. Towards later years he enjoyed afternoon coffee with the "coffee gang". But his greatest enjoyment was being around his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of over 70 years, Bernice, a resident of Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, IA; his son, Donald Wright, Jr. of Onawa, IA; his daughter, Sally (Gary) Goslar of Ute, IA; six grandchildren, Tina (Clint) Sachau of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Shawn (Julie Jorstad) Goslar of Sioux City, IA, Travis Wright of Omaha, NE, Nathan (Fiona) Wright of Seattle, WA, Tyson (Ashley) Wright of Omaha, NE, and Mindy (Duane) Boyle of Danbury, IA; nine great-grandchildren, Skylar Goslar, Lincoln Goslar, Micah Sachau, Carter Boyle, Madison Boyle, Mya Boyle, Trent Huntley, Brittney Huntley, and Devin Huntley; two sisters, Rose Perry of Onawa, IA and Margaret (Roger) Hall of Onawa, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete, Sr. and Cora Wright; mother and father –in-law, Edward and Grace Phipps; four brothers, Albert, Jim, Pete, Chester "Cork"; and his daughter-in-law, Karla Wright.
