Girl Struck by Car Dies

Mapleton Child Playing on Bridge Victim of Accident

A 7-year-old girl, Lea Lundeen of Mapleton, Iowa was killed instantly Sunday afternoon when she darted across a bridge on highway 141 over the Little Sioux river in front of a car about a quarter mile east of Smithland, according to the Iowa highway patrol.

The child, who was playing on the bridge with two other girls, was struck by a car driven by Miss Donna Englke, 18, of Mapleton officers said. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Lundeen, parents of the dead girl, were fishing below the bridge.

Highway Patrolman Howard Swieter of Sioux City said investigations of the accident was continuing. Woodbury County sheriff’s Sgt. Jerry Phelps also investigated.

The body was taken to the Willman funeral home at Rodney, Iowa.
