Russell Dickey McCandless, 70, Whiting, Iowa, died March 31, 1986, at Burgess Memorial Hospital, Onawa, Iowa.

He was born August 25, 1915, at Independence, Iowa to Floyd and Cora Elizabeth (Kiggins) Dickey. When he was five years old, he was adopted by Bert and Ida McCandless and always made his home in the Whiting and Sloan areas. On December 16, 1938, he married Adeline Douglas at Sioux City, Iowa. He retired from farming in 1981.

He was a member of the United Congregational Church of Christ at Sloan where he was secretary-Treasurer of the Sunday school for 27 years.

Survivors include his wife, Adeline; one daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Cora) McLang of Whiting; two grandchildren, Teressa and Debra; and two sisters, Dorothy Peters of Shawnee, Okla.; and Katherine Boots of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and one step-son, Harold Ward.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his adoptive parents.

Services were held on Thursday, April 3, 1986, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Congregational Church of Christ at Sloan, Iowa with Rev. Arthur G. Hermanson officiating. Mrs. Glen Miltenberger, the organist, accompanied Mrs. Fred Gibson who sang, “In The Garden” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.”

Bearers were Gary Wilen, C.R. Servis, Winston Koenig, Donald Lander, Clifford Ping and Ardan Larson.

Interment was in the Sloan Cemetery with arrangements by the Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa.
