Mrs. Cornelia Betten, 68, died Saturday, July 30, at Grossmann Hospital. Death was the result of a complication of diseases which had hospitalized her since October 11, 1954.

She was born October 17, 1886, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vogelaar, Sr. Her mother was the former Martha Maria Vanden Berge. Her parents were homesteading in the Harrison, South Dakota area when she was born. They moved to a farm southwest of Orange City when she was small child, and she grew to womanhood here.

She married Jake A. Betten in 1903. They lived in Orange City, Alton, Ocheyedan and Chicago. He was a cream hauler here for many years.

Mr. and Mrs. Betten were divorced about 15 years ago. She returned here to live with her mother, Mrs. Vogelaar, who died in 1946. Mr. Betten lives in Ocheyedan with a daughter.

Mrs. Betten had been raising her grandson, Neil Betten, a high school student here. Neil is the son of of Mrs. Betten’s oldest daughter, Martha Marie Betten Lonkar, who died in 1939. Mrs. Lonkar, who had lived in Chicago, died of cancer in Sibley where she was being cared for by her mother. Her children are Mrs. Marvin Boerema of Chicago, Douglas and Gail of Chicago, and Neil of Orange City.

Mrs. Bennen’s surviving children, include Mrs. John De Vries, Chicago; Mrs. Harold Gee, Ocheyedan; and Daryl Betten, Sibley. Eleven grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren survive; and one brother, Peter C. Vogelaar of Sibley.

Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Mrs. De Vries has been in Orange City since the first of the year, helping to care for her mother.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 2, in the American Reformed Church with the Reverend J. Berenschot officiating.
