Wm Newman (Newton) Hathaway, one of the pioneers of Monona Couinty and best known citizens of the Kennebec township died at his home Sunday morning, aged nearly 84 years. Mr. Hathaway was born in Wilbraham, Hampden county, Mass. August 27, 1817, and was the son of William and Mary Hyde Hathaway. While he was yet young his parents removed to Caynoga (Cayuga) County, New York, thence to Kalmazoo county, Michigan, and from there to Pottawattamie county, Iowa. Mr. Hathaway came to Monona County in the fall of 1855, and bought for $250 the claim of a man who was nearly starved out, and returned to Pottawattamie County to winter. In March, 1856, he returned to Monona County and settled on this claim and has lived there continuously since, except one year spent in California. Mr. Hathaway was married April 9, 1843, to Rachel Sweet, a native of Canada who died April 24, 1883. They were the parents of eleven children. Mr. Hathaway was married the second time to Mrs. Janet Whitefield, nee Case, January 31, 1885. Mr. Hathaway was the father of J.M. Hathaway, formerly county treasurer and ex-representative of the Ida-Monona district. The funeral was held Tuesday in the old home in Kennebec township and the interment made in the Onawa cemetery.
