Helen N. Nelson, 85, of Whiting, Iowa died Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa with Kathy Jo Mitchell, officiating. Burial will be in the Whiting City Cemetery, Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Helen NaDean was born July 6, 1930 in Missouri Valley, Iowa the daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Davis) Carbaugh. She attended school in Whiting, Iowa where she graduated from Whiting High School in 1949. Helen and Jim Nelson were united in marriage in 1950 in Mapleton, Iowa.
Helen led detasseling crews in the Whiting area for many years. She also worked at Jim's IGA in Sloan, Iowa and Kirby's Corner Market in Whiting, Iowa where she retired from at the age of seventy.

Helen enjoyed sewing, flowers and working in her yard, taking care of her gardens. She loved to be around her family and friends, and spent countless hours entertaining her great grandchildren when they were young. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her best friend and sister-in-law, Maxine Christensen. Helen entered Pleasant View Care Center in 2009 and from the start she was known as the social butterfly, who loved talking, sharing, reminiscing, and enjoying being around everyone.

Helen attended the Whiting Christian Church in Whiting, Iowa and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen is survived by her son, Robert "Juice" Nelson and special friend Amy of Hornick, IA; grandchildren, Angie (Kip) Overton of Adel, IA and Jennifer Dunagan of Soldier, IA; great-grandchildren, Danielle Dunagan of Waterloo, IA, and Tiana and Kade Overton of Adel, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter-in-law, Jody L. Nelson; and one sister, Bev Boes.
