Gary Leon Christenson, Sr., son of Bernard Christenson and Georgia (Scott) Christenson Lagan, was born August 28, 1935 at Onawa, IA. Gary entered into eternal rest on November 13, 2015 at his home in Whiting, IA at the age of 80.
Gary was raised by his Grandmother Christenson and they had lived in Onawa and Sioux City. He attended schools in both of these communities and graduated from Onawa High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served until his honorable discharge on April 20, 1956.
On May 27, 1956, Gary was united in marriage to Linda Fay Carlton and to this union four children were born: Gary, Jr., Daniel, Timothy and Kimberly. Gary and Linda made their home in California for a short time and then moved to Michigan City, IN where he worked as a state prison guard for two years. They moved back to California when Gary accepted a job with the Los Angeles Police Department. Over the years, Gary and Linda made their home in several communities and he worked various jobs. In 1970, he graduated from Southwest Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX and served eight years as a Southern Baptist minister. In 2000, they returned to Iowa and made their home in Whiting. Linda passed away on November 1, 2010.
Gary enjoyed reading, hunting and watching television especially John Wayne westerns and war movies.
Gary is survived by his children: Gary, Jr. (Julie) Christenson of Houston, TX, Daniel (Linda) Christenson of McKinney, TX, Timothy Christenson of Nevada and Kimberly (Gary) Ornelas of Foothill Ranch, CA; one daughter-in-law, Cindy Scott of Des Moines, IA; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one brother, Ronald (Don) Christenson of Yucaipa, CA; two sisters-in-law: Margaret Himmelick of Sioux City, IA and Heidi Knorr of Arizon; other relatives and many friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Linda; two brothers: Norman Christenson and Allen “Butch” Christenson; and one sister, Christine Christensen.
