Wilfred N. Thomas, 84, of Mapleton, Iowa died Monday, December 7, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The funeral Mass will be Thursday, December 10, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Wilfred Nicholas Thomas was born February 16, 1931, in rural Monona County, Iowa, the son of Nicholas Henry and Elizabeth Cecelia (Flammang) Thomas. He grew up on the farm and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Mapleton.

With his strength and positive attitude, Wilfred worked for local farmers as a laborer. He later became the street cleaner for the city of Mapleton, work all done by hand and a strong back. He came to be a familiar person to all and enjoyed a brief conversation with folks on the street as he worked. He also did a great deal of snow removal and lawn care.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton.

Wilfred enjoyed baseball and was often seen at the local baseball field watching high school games or retrieving foul balls. He also watched baseball on TV and liked playing cards. Wilfred was a unique individual with a big heart. He would do anything for you if he could.

Survivors are his four nieces and nephews, Steve Wessling and his wife, Stacey of Sioux City, Iowa, Jean Wessling and Ron Bolyard, Mike Wessling, and Sue Wessling and James Van Cleave, all of Mapleton, Iowa; and five great nieces, Jamie Van Cleave and Grant Jones of Sioux City, Iowa, Amber Van Cleave and Jacob Davis, and Ashley Van Cleave all of Mapleton, Iowa, Kenzie Swanson and her husband, Caleb and their daughter, Emilia of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Kayla Wessling of Sioux City, Iowa; along with many cousins and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Coletta Thomas and Maxine Wessling.
