ONAWA, Iowa | Dale "Pinky" Crawford, 78, of Onawa died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with the Rev. John Sears officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites provided by the U.S. Army, American Legion David McNeill Post 129 of Onawa, and the Monona County V.F.W. Post 2694.

Dale Wesley Crawford was born on Jan. 28, 1936, in Union, Neb., the son of Lawrence Wesley and Ruth Isabell (Eaton) Crawford. He graduated from Whiting High School in Whiting, Iowa, where he was a running back on the Whiting football team that went undefeated for 36 games in a row. Dale grew up on a farm and helped his parents with the farming. He served in the U.S. Army.

Dale and Mary Helen Lazos were united in marriage in 1956 in Arizona. He worked in produce at all of Onawa's grocery stores over the years, and retired from Safeway in Onawa as produce manager.

Dale was a very humble man who loved growing flowers, mowing, riding bicycles, ice skating, and especially playing golf. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Dale received many medals during his time competing at the Iowa Senior Olympics. Dale was a member of First Christian Church in Onawa.

Survivors include his special friend, Georgia Martin of Onawa; his children, Sherri (Dennis) Smith of Omaha, Theresa Crawford of Blencoe, Iowa, Lisa (Roger) Saxen of Onawa, Kevin (Staci) Crawford of Onawa, Rick (Regina) Crawford of Onawa, and Ashley (Tyson) Wright of Omaha; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, JoAnne Warner and Darlyne (John) Olson, all of Oceanside, Calif., Sharon Achord and Carolyn Dyhouse, both of Lakewood, Colo., and Vivian Bennett of North Platte, Neb.; one sister-in-law, Ella Crawford of Mountain Home, Ark.; and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ruth; his wife, Mary Helen; two sisters, Bonita and Irene; one brother, Jerry; and three brothers-in-law.
