MAPLETON, Iowa -- Francis W. "Doc" Naulteus, 92, of Mapleton died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Francis William "Doc" Naulteus was born March 28, 1910, in Hastings, Neb., the son of Dr. Francis W. and Julia (Budnick) Naulteus. He grew up in the area and graduated from Hastings High School. At the young age of 12, he began his motion picture career as a bill boy, usher and projectionist.

On Aug. 20, 1935, he was united in marriage to Laura "Kitch" Trites in Omaha. They made their home in Cherokee, Iowa, where they managed and operated the Arrow Theater.

In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a theater manager of a special services unit. The Naulteuses moved to Mapleton in 1946, where they owned and operated the Maple Theater for 10 years. From 1956 to 1979, Doc worked as an assistant funeral director with Walter Funeral Home and Ambulance Service. His beloved wife died May 22, 1985.

He was a member of Quarry Lodge 404 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, Abu Bekr Shrine band in Sioux City, American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496, Mapleton Community Club board of directors, Willow Dale Golf Course and served as past president of Midwest Senior Citizen Golf Association. He also was a member of the former Trinity Episcopal Church in Mapleton and presently a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors include two nieces, Barbara Trites of Seattle, Wash., and Sue Trach and her husband, Jan, of Locust Grove, Va.; two nephews and their wives, Doug and Patti Trites of Omaha and Bill and Beth Trites of Annadale, Va.; family friend, Eva Treiner of Wichita, Kan.; and many friends.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
