Jayna Kay Settell, 66, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Jayna Kay Riner, the daughter of Russel Eugene and Erma Mae (Anderson) Riner was born September 4, 1941, in rural Sloan, Iowa. Throughout her life she lived in Sloan, Whiting, and Waterloo, Iowa, before moving to Atlantic, Iowa, about 8 years ago. Jayna attended Whiting High School through her junior year. She attended Western Iowa Tech, receiving her GED in 1972. She also attended the Community Action Agency Workshop in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1980, and Hawkeye Institute of Technology from 1988 to 1989.

She held various jobs throughout the years, most of them caring for others. Jayna worked at the Sloan Nursing Home, the Shelby County Departments of Health and Social Services, as well as being a Homemaker/Home Health Aid, Outreach Worker and Intake Worker. Other jobs included working for a plumbing and heating firm and working at Kmart. She also owned and operated D & J Whitehouse Lawn and Snow Removal Service.

On July 27, 1957, Jayna was united in marriage to James Lee Richardson. One son, Roger Lee, was born to this union. On March 5, 1976, she was married to Carroll Settell. She was a very caring and generous person. This was very much evidenced through her nieces and nephews whom she helped raise.

Jayna attended the Zion Lutheran church in Atlantic, Iowa. She was also a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge, Aerie 3763, of Atlantic, Iowa.

Survivors include her son, Roger Richardson and his wife, Deb of Atlantic, Iowa; brothers, Jack Riner of Arkansas, and Clarence Anderson of Sioux City, Iowa; a sister Jeanette Paul, and her husband Clifford of Phoenix, Arizona; her grandchildren, Ryan Richardson of Omaha, Nebraska, Linsey Richardson of Bellevue, Nebraska; her step-grandchildren, Danielle Lyons of Johnston, Iowa, and Kelsey and Jordan Tupper of Atlantic, Iowa; a step-great-grandson, Jaxon Pross of Johnston, Iowa; a niece Brenda Hansen and husband, Craig of Raymond, Iowa; a great-nephew, Todd Riner of Council Bluffs, Iowa; great nieces, Kayla Riner and her son, Kyeden Dorscher of Atlantic, Iowa, and Shelby Hansen of Raymond, Iowa; an aunt, Mabel Hunter of Sloan, Iowa; and other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Jayna was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, James Richardson.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation with a Memorial Service has been scheduled for Friday, March 7, 2008. Visitation is from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the Memorial Service to begin at 6:00 p.m. The family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
