ONAWA, Iowa | Dwight Braden Harms, 78, of Onawa died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa.

A celebration of life service will be 10 a.m. Friday at United Church of Christ in Blencoe, Iowa.

Dwight was born on March 14, 1936, in Sioux City, to John and Esther (Braden) Harms. Dwight attended Blencoe High School, graduating in 1954. Upon his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the U.S. Naval Operations in the South Pacific.

Dwight returned to the Blencoe area after his Naval service. He went to work on the family farm of John and Lila Ankerstjerne.

Dwight proudly carried the American Flag at Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades. Dwight was an active member of the local V.F.W. Post.

Dwight is survived by one sister, Joanne (Ray) Scarpella-Brunson of Fort Collins, Colo.; sister-in-law, Doris Harms of Monroe, La.; sister-in-law, Phyllis Harms of Estherville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his family, Lila Ankerstjerne of Onawa, Sandy Beechy of Blencoe, Sherri (Bart) McDowell of Blencoe, Scott (Julie) Ankerstjerne of Whiting, and Vernice Ankerstjerne of Onawa; and the Ankerstjerne extended families who loved him deeply.

Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, John and Esther Harms; his twin brother, Dwayne Harms; and best friend, John Ankerstjerne.
