Volunteer of many years dies April 7

Luella H. Dean, age 85, of Mapleton died Friday, April 7, 2000, at Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 11 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Pastor Shirley Textor officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the organist and soloist for the service and she sang, "In The Garden". The congregation sang, "The Old Rugged Cross". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Luella Harriett Dean was born March 5, 1915 in Monona County near Rodney, Iowa, the daughter of George and Maude (Edger) Hollister. On December 17, 1932, she was united in marriage to George Dean in Dakota City, Nebraska. He passed away June 29, 1966. Luella lived her entire life in the Mapleton community.

She was a very active member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton where she was also a member of the Women's Society and served for years as Chairman of the funeral committee. She worked at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton as activity director for years and continued to volunteer her time as head of the sewing committee at Maple Heights until the time of her death. She received the Governor's Award for her volunteer services. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens, the Civic Club, the Garden Club, Maple Heights Auxiliary and the Ring House Committee.

Those survivors left to cherish Luella's memory include two daughters, Georgia Scheer of Mapleton, Iowa and Korleen Hall and her husband, Farris of Hobe Sound, Florida; one foster daughter, Evon Blakely of Rodney, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, along with other relatives, neighbors and many good friends.

Along with her husband, Luella was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, and one great-grandson, Brian Greenough.

Pallbearers were Darren Hieber, Mike Nepper, Brett Greenough, Aaron Piper, Ryan Greenough and Joshua Piper.
