SOLDIER, Iowa | Mary Helen Severson, 81, of Soldier passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at her home.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier with Pastor Joel Gueningsman officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, rural Soldier. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Mary Helen was born Aug. 6, 1932, in rural Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of Winston and Florence (Mahler) Kalskett. She was raised in the Moorhead area and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1949. She furthered her education at Morningside College in Sioux City and received her teaching certificate. Mary Helen taught school in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Rockwell City, Iowa, and Huxley, Iowa.

Mary Helen Kalskett and James LeRoy Severson were united in marriage on Aug. 8, 1954, at Soldier. After their marriage, Mary Helen finished teaching at Huxley and then raised her children on the farm near Soldier as a devoted housewife and mother. She worked in her later years at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. Her loving husband, James, passed away Dec. 10, 2010, in Omaha, Neb.

Mary Helen centered her life around her faith and her family. She was a very active and involved member of Soldier Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She enjoyed baking, reading, crosswords, gardening and birds, and was always on the go and hard-working. In Mary Helen and Jim’s retirement, they enjoyed visiting their son and his family in Arizona, golfing, playing cards, and spending time with all their family and friends. Mary Helen’s family will remember her as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her three children, Doug Severson and his wife Kristin of Phoenix, Ariz., Matt Severson of Omaha, and Sara (Severson) Price and her husband Mike of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Nicole Severson and her fiancé Andrew Schmailzl of Phoenix, and Curtis Severson and his wife Kristen of Sioux City; two great-granddaughters, Ashlyn and Isabella; sister, Anita Moorhead and her husband John of Moorhead; brother, Charles Kalskett and his wife Nancy of Gretna, Neb.; sisters-in-law, Elsie Kalskett of Moorhead, Donna (Severson) Bebber and her husband Niles of Lakeland, Fla., and Patricia (Severson) Vaughn and her husband Frank of Birmingham, Ala.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Winston and Florence; her husband, James L. Severson; and brother, James Kalskett.
