Basil J. Prichard, 81, of Hornick, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 25, 1996, at Pleasant View Nursing Home at Whiting, Iowa.

He was born at Hornick December 29, 1914, the son of Jay and Emily (Mellott) Prichard, and spent his entire life in the Hornick area. He graduated from Hornick High School in 1933.

Mr. Prichard operated a milk route from 1937 - 1942. At that time he purchased the family farm where he spend the remainder of his life. He married Mabel Odland December 29, 1936, at Canton, South Dakota. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Hornick December 29, 1986. She died November 23, 1992 in Omaha.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Hornick, where he taught Sunday School for several years and served on various church committees and on the church board. He was a member of Attica Lodge #502 A.F. & A.M. at Sloan where he was a Past Master; the Sioux City Consistory; York Rite Bodies; and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux. City. He was a member of the Vintage Wheels Club of the Shrine.

Mr. Prichard participated in many parades in the area with his 1922 Model T. Ford. He served on the Grant Center School Board; on several county committees; and was Clerk of the Grant Township for many years.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Shull-Hiebenthal and husband Rodney of Milford, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Kerry and husband Chris Koenig, Kelly and husband Jerry Bosak, and Kyle and wife Jodi; two brothers Paul and Phyllis Prichard of Mapleton, and Steward and wife Justine of Hornick; and three sisters, Helen Birchard of Hornick, Effie Till of Hornick and Grace Parker of Orange, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Gene, his wife, Mabel; and two brothers and one sister.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Friday, December 27, 1996, at the United Methodist Church, Hornick, Iowa, with Rev. Edgar Elliot officiating. The organist, Mrs. Robert Madsen, played the hymns, "Softly And Tenderly" and "Hymn of Promise" for congregational singing.

Casket Bearers were Rex C. Persinger, Don Hunter, Jake Prichard, Mark Till, Robert Madsen, and Ed Nelson.

Interment was in the Grant Township Cemetery, Rodney, Iowa, with Masonic Rites by Attica Lodge #502, A. F. & A.M. Steven Jewett, Orator.

Arrangements were by Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Loess Hills Historical Society of Monona County of the High School Scholarship Fund or the Attica Lodge
