U.S. Marine Corps, Retired Leonard Louis Schwingdorf, of Las Vegas, Nev., passed away Jan. 12. He was 83 years old.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 31, at St. Clair Cemetery at Ute at 2 p.m. with Rev. Scott Jensen officiating.

Military graveside honors will be provided by the American Legion Aaby Post #442 of Ute and the Ute V.F.W. Post #5605.

Leonard was born Jan. 29, 1930, to Elmer and Frieda Schwingdorf on a farm outside of Mapleton. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Aug. 4, 1950.

Leonard was united in marriage to Donna Ann Barker in Denison. They were blessed with six children, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant after serving 20 years during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He lived in California for 15 years and then moved to Las Vegas.

In 1986, he was united in marriage to Sally Olson and lived in Las Vegas and then moved to Ute and was the owner of the Gardens of Ute. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, and gardening. He moved to Rockport, Texas, in 1996.

He was united in marriage to Clara Wessel, March 16, 1997. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #363 in Rockport, Texas. He was a life member of the VFW and Elks Club.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer; mother, Frieda; and two brothers, Arlo and Robert.

Those survivors to cherish his memory are his wife, Clara; his six children, Diann Anders of Los Angeles, Calif., Elaine Boyer, Sherry Aseph/Rognlie and husband Bruce Rognle, Leonard L. Schwingdorf Jr. and his wife, Lynn Schwngdorf, Keith Schwingdorf and Candy Schwingdorf, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; many grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
