Dorothy Evelyn (Wellner) Kroll died May 12 in Onawa at the age of 81 years, 11 months, 26 days.

Dorothy was born May 17, 1932, in rural Crawford County near Charter Oak to Herman and Anna (Timm) Wellner. She attended rural Lutheran Parochial Schools in the Charter Oak and Ute area. After completion of school, she worked outside the home at various jobs including the Ute Café. As a child, she was baptized, and in 1946 was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Ricketts.

She married Delbert Kroll on Jan. 3, 1953, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ute and their union was blessed with two children. They resided in Ute until 1962 and then moved to Mapleton.

Dorothy was a daycare provider for 15 years and was employed by Griffin Pharmacy from 1976 to 1992. She was employed for Mrs. Ganzhorn beginning in 1999. When even with the dedicated care of those like Dorothy, that work ended in 2009, when Mrs. Ganzhorn could no longer live at home.

Dorothy was a faithful member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, a Sunday School Teacher, Saturday School helper, Vacation Bible School helper, and belonged to Mary Circle. Since 1968, Dorothy was the Cheer Person for St. Matthew, which entailed being responsible for sending birthday and sympathy cards to church members, a job she really loved. Even after budgets restricted the program, Dorothy continued to seed her cheerful cards for years. Other hobbies included making artificial floral arrangements, riding motorcycles, and playing cards.

Survivors include her husband, Delbert, of 61 years; a daughter, Pam Campbell and her husband, Bill, of Hartford, S.D., and their children, Billy and Brittany; a son, Brent Kroll and his wife, Deb, of Ricketts, and their children Steven, Heath, Nathan, Trenton, Amber, Sierra, Breckan, and Ethan; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Aaron, Jailynn, and LeAsia; four sisters, Helen Berens, Ruth Schmieder, and Esther Remmes all of Charter Oak, and Emma Langholdt of Denison; and one brother, Ernest Wellner of Texas; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Anna Wellner; four brothers, Herman and his wife, Irene, August, Martin during W.W.II, and Sonny in infancy; two sisters, Wilhelminia Schwingdorf, and her husband, Earl, and Marie Christiansen and her husband, Robert; and four brother-in-law, Hubert “Buster” Berens, Benny Schmieder, Gehert Langholdt, and Robert Remmes.

Funeral Service was Thursday, May 15, 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Mapleton, with Rev. Pastor Scott Jensen officiating. Message in Music was by Karen Krusen, organist, and included congregational singing of “I’m But A Stranger Here,” “Oh, That the Lord Would Guide My Ways,” and “Savior Again, To Thy Dear Name.”

Pallbearers were grandsons Heath Kroll, Nathan Kroll, Trenton Kroll, Billy Campbell, Breckan Kroll, Ethan Kroll.

Visitation was Wednesday, May 14, after 5 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Following the interment everyone was invited and encouraged to return to the church basement for a time of sharing food and fellowship.
