Stanley Gordon Skow, 73, died May 2 in Mapleton.

Stanley was born March 10, 1941, in Onawa, the son of Gordon and Donna (Johnson) Skow. The family lived in the Castana area except for a short time in Omaha, Neb.

Stan attended school in Castana and Mapleton, and, in 1963, he enlisted in the Army National Guard.

On May 24, 1963, Stanley was united in marriage to Mavis Lyman at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. The couple lived in Omaha, Neb., until 1966, when Stan’s Guard unit was called to active duty during the Vietnam War. As a result of this action, the young family moved to Fort Carson, Colo. They returned to Mapleton in 1969.

Stan worked at the Mapleton Co-Op Station for a short time and then Flanigan Brothers. He then bought his own truck and worked in the trucking business until his retirement in 1998.

Stanley ran for Monona County Supervisor and won three terms, serving 12 years until 2010, a portion of that time as Chairman of the Board. Stan truly loved his role as Supervisor, and he made a whole new group of friends and colleagues through his service. As a result of these alliances, it would take Stan all day just to get his driver’s license renewed because of all of the people he needed to visit while at the courthouse that day.

Stan was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. He was also a dedicated member of the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton where he regularly served in military graveside honors.

After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Mavis and the freedom he felt in driving around in their convertible. He loved everything John Deere and would frequently defend it over that “other color.” Stan liked to go to coffee every afternoon and visit for hours with his buddies. He was gifted with the ability of sharing an easy conversation and a friendly laugh. When you think of Stan you just can’t help but smile

.

Those left to embrace their memories of Stan include Mavis, his wife of nearly 51 years; a daughter, Lisa Wenger (Tom Weber) of Danbury; a son, Darrin Skow (Kris Brenner) of Danbury; five grandchildren, Matt, Samantha, and Rebecca Wenger, and Garrett and Max Skow; four great-grandchildren, Ashton Lichtenberg, Jeff Wenger, Olivia Wenger, and Dante Skow; one sister and her husband, Linda and Lowell Iske of Papillion, Neb.; one brother, David Skow of Plano, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and a “truckload” of good friends.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Judy Skow, who passed away just one week before Stan.

Funeral Service was Wednesday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Stan’s nephew, Rev. Steve Bielenberg, officiating.

Message in Music was by Karen Krusen, organist. Congregational singing included “I Know That My Redeemer Lives,” “Abide With Me,” and “Take My Hand Precious Lord, Lead Me Home.”

Honorary Pallbearers were Stanley’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Matt Wenger, Samantha Wenger, Rebecca Wenger, Garrett Skow, Max Skow, Ashton Lichtenberg, Jeff Wenger, Olivia Wenger, and Dante Skow.

Pallbearers were Tom Pierce, Neil Seuntjens, Dick Schleis, Bob Otto, Leo Dose, Gene Banks, along with the other fellow members of the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496.

Visitation was Tuesday, May 6, from 4-7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. and “A Tribute to Grandpa” by Samantha Wenger.

Military Honors and Interment were by American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton.

Everyone was invited and encouraged to go to the church basement following the interment for a time of sharing food and fellowship.

Armstrong Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
