3 April 2014MAPLETON, Iowa | Duane L. Ibsgaard, 80, of Mapleton died March 31, 2014 at his residence.
Abiding by Duane’s wishes, his body was donated to science. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the church by the American Legion Loren Hollister Legion Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation with the family will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Root Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa.
Duane L. Ibsgaard was born on May 23, 1933, near Oto, Iowa, to Anker and Beulah (Slentz) Ibsgaard. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1950. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a personnel specialist and member of the color guard while stationed in Fort Bragg during the Korean conflict.
On Nov. 27, 1954, Duane married Florence A. Grothe with whom he had three children. He worked as a mechanic for several years and also ran the Smithland Gas Station. In 1974, Duane joined the Iowa D.O.T., residing in Sibley, Iowa, until his retirement in 1998. Duane and Florence relocated to Casa Grande, Ariz., until moving back to Mapleton in 2012 to be closer to family.
Duane was an avid mechanic throughout his life, loved to travel and fuss with computers and electronic gadgets. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His family will miss Duane’s candor, orneriness, generosity and humor. While in Mapleton, Duane was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was also a longtime member of American Legion Post in Ashton, Iowa.
Duane is survived by his wife, Florence; his son, Timothy Ibsgaard and his wife, Holly of Temple, Okla.; his daughter, Sherry and her husband, Jim Hegg of Omaha; seven grandchildren, Stacie (Todd) Anderson of Le Mars, Iowa, Stephanie (Bill) Vaul and Joshua (Amanda) Menin of Sioux City, Justin (Deb) Hegg of Omaha, Amanda Hegg of Bellevue, Neb., and David and Jimmy Bradshaw of Oklahoma City, Okla.; nine great-grandchildren; his brother, Bob Ibsgaard of Sioux City; and three sisters, Donna (John) Hall of St. Paul, Minn., Betty (Gary) Castle of Mapleton, and Joan Sawyer of Whiting, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his eldest daughter, Michelle Menin; and a great-grandson, Miles Vaul.
In lieu of flowers or cards, donations may be made to either the Wounded Warrior Project or Burgess Hospice in Onawa, Iowa.
