CHARLES EDWIN HITCHMAN

Charles Edwin Hitchman, 64, Blencoe, Iowa, President and Chairman of the Board of Blencoe State Bank, died March 22, 1987, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, after a long illness.

C. Edwin “Ed” was born July 22, 1922, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Charles Mullen and Edna Mae (Ballard) Hitchman. He attended Ord (Neb.) High School and graduated in 1939. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1944. On April 26, 1944, he married Eleanore Ruth Wolfe in Annapolis, Maryland. During World War II he served as a Lt. J. G. in the U. S. Navy. Ed and his father served in the bank at Calloway, Nebraska, for several years. In 1953, Ed and his family moved to Blencoe and purchased the Blencoe State Bank. He was currently serving as President and Chairman of the Board.

He was a member of the Blencoe United Church of Christ and was very active in his church and community. He was also a member of the Steven-Kelley American Legion Post #665 at Blencoe, Blencoe Community Betterment, and served on several boards, including the Monona County Conservation Board.

Survivors include: his wife, Eleanore; five children, Judy Mock of Blencoe; Charles E. Hitchman II of Blencoe; James Hitchman of Pine Bush, N. Y.; Mrs. D. R. (Rebecca) Langren of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and Lucinda Hitchman of Blencoe; one sister, Mrs. Hubert (Mary) Pandorf of Callaway, Nebr.; seven grandchildren and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 1987, in the Blencoe Community Center, with Rev. Donald Stoll officiating. The organist, Mrs. Bob Collison, Jr., accompanied Mrs. Fred Gibson who sang “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”. The congregation sang “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory”.

Active Bearers were John Hubert, Ron Cutler, Tom Bruegger, Doug Zima, Richard Ping and Marvin Keele.

Honorary Bearers were C. A. Cartmell, Gene Carlson, J. W. Hodgson, C. E. Jirovsky, Augustus Hanson, Robert Comfort, Robert Collison, William Irvin and Russ Cartmell.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe with Military Graveside Services by Stevens-Kelley American Legion Post #665. Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
