ONAWA, Iowa | Ruth L. Johnson, 100, of Onawa died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Root Funeral Home in Onawa, with the Rev. Don Collison officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ruth Luella Johnson, daughter of Ole and Ingeborg (Sandvold) Johnson, was born in the family home near Moorhead, Iowa, on Aug. 25, 1913. Ruth attended school in Moorhead, graduating in 1931. She then attended Dana College in Blair, Neb., from 1933 to 1934.

After college, Ruth worked different jobs before serving as the first Monona County Drainage District clerk. She then worked as secretary for the Monona County Board of Education and Onawa-based Area of Education Agency for 20 years. Ruth made her home at Center Heights in Onawa for the past 30 years until moving to Pleasant View Care Center three weeks ago.

Ruth was baptized on Oct. 10, 1913, and confirmed in October 1929 in the Lutheran faith at Soldier Lutheran Church. She currently was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa.

Ruth is survived by a niece, Ruth Chancey and husband, James of Sioux City; two nephews, Gordon Foss and wife, Barbara of Soldier, Iowa, and Cleo "Bud" Ping of Sloan, Iowa; grandnephews; grandnieces; dear friend, Sharon Farber of Onawa; and other relatives and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Edith Foss and husband, Oscar, Alice Johnson and husband, Clarence, and Amanda Johnson in infancy; one brother, Oscar Johnson and wife, Hope; two nephews, James Johnson and Bill Johnson; and one niece, Ila Ping.
