Charles Uhl 1919-2009

IDA GROVE - Charles Joseph Uhl passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in lda Grove at the age of 89 Years, 5 months, and 10 days. Visitation, a scripture service, and Knights of Columbus service were held on Friday, May 1, 2009, all at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in lda Grove.

The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in lda Grove. Officiating was Rev. David Hemann with Deacon Mike Stover as concelebrant. The Message in Music was led by Stacy Schnuckel.

Pallbearers were Mark Weber, Dennis Meier, Bob Otto, Matt Maynard, Craig Hatler, and David Uhl. Honorary Pallbearers were Charles' grandchildren Kyle McBride; Michael Uhl, Jr.; Neil Chalupa; Thomas Uhl; Rochelle Maynard; and Ashley Uhl. Military honors were conducted by American, Lqgion McNamara-Moore. Post #61 of lda Grove. Charles donated his body to Creighton University. Burial will be at a later date in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton.

Armstron Funeral $ervrce was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles was born on November 18,1919, near Mapleton, lowa, to John and Elizabeth (Welte) Uhl. He attended Living Springs School. He entered the Army in September 1942 during World War II. He took basic training at Camp Roberts, California, and Camp White, Oregon, before leaving for the Asia Pacific area. After being on the water 31 days, he arrived at Lingayne Gulf on the island of Luzon. Later he was sent to Papau, New Guinea, and the Philippines and then to Japan for the signing of the Armistice.

He received two bronze stars for the New Guinea and Phipippines Campaigns, the Victory Medal, the Philippines Liberation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Carbine Sharpshooter Medal, and the Overseas Bars, being honorably discharged in January 1946 from the 650th Army Engineers with a rank of Tech 4, Sgt.

He worked for Armour in Sioux City and for Langenfeld studio in Carroll decorating churches. He married lrene Nielsen on February 17,1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Mapleton. They started farming in 1949 in the Mapleton-Danbury area and retired in 1989 in lda Grove. He was an honorable member of the Knights of Columbus.

ln addition to his wife, he is survived by his five children, Maurice Uhland Judy of Wichita,
Kansas; Dr. Marilyn and Richard Chalupa of Muncie,lndiana; Michael and Bonnie Uhl of Lake Ozark; Missouri; and Marc & Jolene Uhl and Marcene and Rick McBride of Danbury. Grandchildren and step grandchildren include Sommer Uhl, Shay Uhl, Jordan Uhl, Neil Chalupa, Michael Uhl Jr., Ashley Uhl, Thomas Uhl, Rochelle McBride Maynard, Kyle McBride, and Jessica Jordan. He is also survived by a sister Helen and Leo Weber of Mapleton and a brother Leo and Martha Uhl of Danbury.

He was prbceded in death by his parents; four sisters Berniece Uhl; Caroline Meier; Mary Detterman; Sister Mary Anne Uhl; one brother, Alfred Uhl; and one granddaughter, Jenna Irene Chalupa.

Charlie was a steward of the land. He enjoyed farming and raising livestock. He experienced
farming startlng with horses to using modern Equipment. In his retirement years, he and Irene enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arizona. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren and feeding the birds, especially cardinals.
