Mabel Thomas nee Steele, daughter of William and Mary Steele, was born March 15, 1880 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was the youngest child in a family of seven.

She came to Monona County about 1900 and resided in the Mapleton vicinity until 1935, at which time she moved with her family to Smithland.

She was married to John Thomas January 14, 1903, at Mapleton. This union was blessed with one son. Her husband preceded her in death March 22, 1945.

In 1950 she and her son moved to a farm 1 mile north of Smithland, where she lived until the time of her death, Monday, Oct. 4, 1954, at her home. She had reached the age of 74 years, 6 months and 19 days.

She is survived by one son, Joseph, of Smithland; one brother, James Steele of Charter Oak; one sister, Mrs. Hattie Altmanshofer of Mapleton. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1954, at 2 p.m. at the Byers-Walter chapel in Mapleton. Rev. George Osborn officiated.

Interment was in Heisler cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Johnk, Earl Hines, Fred Cory, Henry Bockelmann, Theodore Thomas and Paul Albertsen.
