Richard Walter Sonksen, 88, of Mapleton, died Tuesday, January 18, 1983 near his home.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Peter's United Church of Christ. The Rev. Richard Hempenius officiated. Burial was in the Heisler Cemetery, rural Mapleton. There was a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Sonksen was born October 18, 1894, in Cooper Township, near Mapleton, to Ferdinand Sonksen and Johanna Boock.

He married Frances Ruchti January 27, 1926, at Mapleton. He was a lifelong farmer who retired in 1960.

Mr. Sonksen was a charter member of the United Church of Christ, past school director in rural Cooper Township and the Mapleton Public School. He held the office of trustee and clerk in Cooper Township several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, two brothers and one grandson.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Walter of Ida Grove, Marvin of Mapleton and Elmer of Clear Lake; five daughters, Mrs. Edmund (Mildred) Jacobs of Ida Grove, Mrs. Lester (Beulah) Renken of Lin wood, Nebraska, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Peduzi of Huntington Beach, California, Mrs. John (Anna) Frautschi of Worland,
