DIED AT DAMBURY

Mrs. Wm. Smith, a Pioneer Suddenly
Passes Away

From Danbury Review

Death came almost without warning to Mrs. Wm Smith one of the pioneer women of the Maple Valley at her home just northwest of Danbury at a late hour Saturday evening. Mrs. Smith had been in town during the afternoon and seemed in her usual health as she chatted with the various friends she met. The day was cold and disagreeable which may have had a bad effect but she went home apparently well and gave no signs of illness until about ten o'clock when she called her son and was found to be in a serious condition A doctor was at once summoned by telephone
and although quickly at hand he was too late.

Obituary

Catharine O'Neil was the daughter of Francis and Rose O'Neil, and was born in Glascow, Scotland, March 2, 1837. With her parents she came to Columbia County, Wisconsin when eleven years old. There she was married to William Smith in 1856 and there they made their home until the autumn of 1865 when they started for the west arriving at Mapleton the last of June 1866 after spending the winter in Franklin County, Nebraska had been their original destination but they decided to locate in the Maple Valley and took a homestead in Monona County about two and one half miles southwest of where Danbury now stands. In 1872 they moved to the present home just northwest of Danbury where Mr. Smith died May 16, 1899. Here for nearly forty years was maintained a home that was synonymous with hospitality both to the neighbors of the early days and the later comers as well. In all the elements of true womanhood the deceased was richly blessed and her works do follow her.

Wis., Henry of Joseph, Oregon, Mrs. M K Patterson and Mrs. M. G. Feltas of Correctionville, Charles, of Odebolt, Mrs. J M. Richards, of Bedim, Minn., and Ruth of Danbury.

The funeral services were held Wednesday forenoon from the First M E. church of Danbury in charge of Rev J R Tumbleson. The burial service was conducted by the Danbury Chapter of
the Order of the Eastern Star, of which the deceased had for many year been a loyal and loved member.

The active pall bearers were from among the old friends and neighbors of the family as follows
W.B. Booher, W.D. Gibson, O.F. Seibold, M.D. Cord, J. W Lippold and W K Osborn The interment was in the Heisler cemetery.
