29 December 1927MRS. BELLE COLEDGE DIES CHRISTMAS EVE
NOBLE CHARACTER PASSES ON AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS—BORN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE — FUNERAL HELD ON MONDAY
Mrs. Belle Coledge, whose residence in Mapleton dated back to the pioneer days, died at her home here at 10:00 o'clock Saturday night after a serious illness of one week. Mrs. Coledge had been failing for some time. She was 70 years old.
Everyone who knew Mrs. Coledge referred to her affectionately as "Aunt Belle." She possessed a kindly manner and a heart of gold. Her passing therefore means the loss of a true friend to the many who loved her.
Belle Ola Howe was born at Littleton, N. H., July I8, 1857. She was the youngest daughter of Eben and A. C. Howe, who were of thrifty New England stock. Belle Howe became the bride of John H. Coledge at Onawa, Ia., February 16, 1876.
Mrs. Coledge had been a member of the Methodist church since early girlhood, and with the exception of about six years spent in Oregon, she and her husband spent most of their lives in Mapleton.
The Rebekah and Woodmen circle counted Mrs. Coledge as one of their good workers. She also was a member of Trinity guild.
Besides her husband Mrs. Coledge is survived by one niece, Mrs. O.B. Smith, of Whiting, and a host, of friends.
Funeral services were held at the home at 1:00 o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. George W. Dunn officiating. The Rebekah were in charge of services at the Heisler cemetery where interment was made.
