Ruby Dorothy was born on Nov. 7, 1919, in rural Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Chris and Mabel (Strait) Brink. When Ruby was 9 years old her mother died, and Ruby then moved to the Dow City, Iowa, area. She attended school and worked for her grandparents until moving when she was 15 years old to the Ute and Castana, Iowa, areas. Ruby lived with various families in that area while attending high school, and was a nanny and telephone operator until she graduated from Castana High School in 1939.

Ruby and Harold Phipps were united in marriage on April 2, 1940, and seven children were born to this union. She enjoyed taking care of her big family while helping Harold on the farm.

Ruby loved quilting, being around her family, and playing cards. For many summers, Ruby and Harold and part of the family would go to Minnesota fishing. While fishing, it was a quest to catch as many as possible. They also enjoyed several trips to Las Vegas with friends and family. She was a member of Blencoe United Church of Christ, Women’s Fellowship, and the Blencoe Book Club.

Survivors include four sons and three daughters, H. Lee (Margaret) Phipps of Little Sioux, Iowa, JoAnn (Charles) Orsini of Onawa, Clarence (Candace) Phipps of Onawa, Donald (Denise) Phipps of Blencoe, Larry (Pat) Phipps of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Linda (David) Urban of Sioux City, and Lori (Raymond) Mousel of Onawa; a brother, Willis "Buck" Brink of Onawa; 32 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
