Gran, Maude Tina 1889-1993

GRAN, BRADEN, DINWIDDLE

Maude Tina Gran, daughter of Charles Turner Braden and Mary Eliza (Lyde) Dinwiddle Braden was born November 24, 1889, near Soldier, Iowa. She died December 2, 1993, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, at the age of one hundred four years.

Maude was married to Christian C. Gran on September 6, 1911, at the Christian church parsonage in Onawa. This union was blessed with eight children. They farmed in Jordan Township near Soldier until 1958, when they retired and moved to Charter Oak. They were privileged to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Chris died in 1963. Maude moved to the retirement apartments in 1969 and the Maple Heights Nursing Home in 1983.

Maude’s mother died when Maude was five years old so she, her younger sister and brother were raised by their father and grandmother, Allie Adeline Braden Eades. As a youth she attended the Christian Church and later was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and joined the Soldier Lutheran Church. Maude graduated from Normal Training Institute and became a teacher. Her love of reading and writing continued, and in her lifetime read the Bible from cover to cover several times. She wrote numerous letters and traced family history in her diary. She was a loving and caring person always interested in the activities of the family and friends. Even in her waning years, Maude retained her gracious disposition.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and infant daughter, Ruth; a son-in-law, Elmer Stockfleth; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Gran; one sister, Edith Ulven; one brother, Ray Braden; and a grandson, Harlan Gran.

She is survived by children: Lillian Gran of Mapleton; Roy Gran of Lake View; Edna Stockfleth of Schleswig; Dorothy and Ervin Jahn of Gillette, Wyoming; Beulah and Bud Jepersen of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Merrill and Bette Jo Gran of Soldier; Nadine and Don Friedrichs of Charter Oak. Also fifteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 6, 1993, at the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa, with Rev. Thomas R. Hagen officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery in Soldier, Iowa. Mrs. Leonard Jensen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, “In The Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Pallbearers were: Craig Friedrichs, Roger Stockfleth, Gary Jespersen, Brent Friedrichs, Austin Gran, Gailen Gran, David Jahn, Jim Gran and Dale Stockfleth. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the WELCA. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
